Name: Danielle Schuh

Brief personal introduction: I currently teach English at Bonduel High School. Over the course of the past two years here, I taught: English I, English II, American Literature, Creative Writing, Advanced Composition, and Written Communications. I love working with people, and I feel very fortunate to have had two years with such wonderful students and staff memebers.


Overview of content/topic level of unit plan:

-Subject: English: American Literature (Grades 11 and 12)
-Topic: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest:
-The importance of reading and writing about literature
-Writing in the 1950’s
-Looking at specific themes: individual vs. society and medical treatment (human treatment)
-The overall idea of this unit is for students to focus on the answering the questions: Why is writing literature important? Why do we read literature? Students will also be looking at a specific time period in American literature (the 1950's) and connecting the reading to themes still relevant to today. First, students will read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. They will answer questions on blogs, and come up with questions to ask their peers, therefore, holding a continual conversation while reading the book. Students will then make real-world connections while researching the modern situation of one of the main themes in the book. (Individual vs. Society or Human Treatment) Then, students will evaluate the information they gathered and create a web book comparing and contrasting the situation in the novel within the time period it was written and now. Finally, students will present their web book to the class.
-I am looking for any ideas on ways in which I could improve this unit or add more aspects to encourage deeper thinking from my students.
